Trimming Apple One surprising move from the conglomerate was selling about 10 million Apple shares (just 1% of its massive stake) in the fourth quarter. Second, it could have been Buffett's investment deputies Todd Combs and Ted Weschler who trimmed the Apple stake in order to fund other purchases. There's a chance that Buffett might reveal at the annual meeting the mystery bank stock that Berkshire has been buying for two quarters straight . Berkshire now owns more than 70 million of the tracking stock. "You need higher prices, or it doesn't work," Buffett said at Berkshire's 2023 annual meeting.

Read previewApple's new development in AI aims to take on OpenAI's GPT products and may make your interactions with virtual assistants like Siri more intuitive. The ReaLM system, which stands for "Reference Resolution As Language Modeling," understands ambiguous on-screen images and content and conversational context to enable more natural interactions with AI. The new Apple system outperforms other large language models like GPT-4 when determining context and what linguistic expressions refer to, according to the researchers who created it. The ReaLM system can interpret images embedded in text, which the researchers say can be used to extract information like phone numbers or recipes from on-page images. The researchers behind ReaLM and representatives for OpenAI did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Business Insider.

As the second quarter begins, we're taking stock of the AI trade. Microsoft leads There's no denying Microsoft's execution, which paved the way for generative AI to go mainstream and the company to then make money from the emerging technology. Alphabet may have messed up by letting Microsoft leap ahead on generative AI, but the company has years of experience in artificial intelligence research. That alone should tell you just how big these companies are betting that generative AI will indeed be transformative — on par with smartphones or the internet itself. It comes as Apple is expected to unveil several new AI features at its developer conference in June. According to a Bloomberg report, Apple is interested in licensing and building Google’s Gemini AI engine, which includes chatbots and other AI tools, into upcoming iPhones and its iOS 18 features. A partnership with Google would catapult Apple into the growing AI arms race. Apple, Google and OpenAI did not respond to a request for comment. Behind the scenes, Apple reportedly has been working its on-device generative AI capabilities and acquiring companies, such as Canadian startup DarwinAI.

Unfortunately for Apple, that task could be complicated as signs emerge that its workhorse gadget needs a revamp. China, Apple's most important international market, has started to sour on iPhones, bucking a trend of growth in other regions. I loved my name — until Amazon ruined it

That's until Amazon created Alexa, the ubiquitous little device that took the world by storm in 2015. That cultural moment was the peak of my torment: I couldn't introduce myself to anyone without having a dreaded Amazon moment. In almost every meeting, there would be a one-minute distraction for us to listen to Alexa say, "I'm sorry, I'm having trouble understanding right now…" while everyone snickered to themselves and waited for her to finish. If anything, being able to say "Alexa, like the Amazon robot" makes it more memorable when I meet new people. The most ironic part is that the Amazon device can actually be named something else.

Apple is probably shutting down its electric car project in favor of some big bets on artificial intelligence, according to UBS. AAPL YTD mountain Apple shares this year The UBS report came after Bloomberg reported on Tuesday that the iPhone maker is reportedly axing its decade-long venture to build an electric vehicle. Among the potential upcoming AI announcements, Vogt is bracing for Apple CEO Tim Cook to debut a new processor in the iPhone 16 supporting AI, and a new AI or large language model feature on the iOS 18 operating system. UBS also anticipated updates to "Siri" and "Messages" that would enable new features, such as summaries of incoming texts. There are some financial downsides to Apple in halting its car venture, Vogt said.

Smartphone makers flooded Mobile World Congress to show off new AI features. More AI tools are moving on to devices, which would make them faster and cheaper to run. Now, as the industry looks to capitalize on the AI boom and galvanize a stagnating mobile market, phone makers want the AI tools to run locally on the phone itself. The company attended MWC to tout how it's helping phone makers such as Samsung and Honor run more AI tools on their phones. Samsung was also there, previewing some of the AI tools it's begun to roll out on its phones, including a nifty live-translation feature.
